Burning Mouth Syndrome is most common in post menopause women. The reason is thought to be the reduction of estrogen causes a loss of bitter taste buds. Once the bitter taste buds are gone, the area can experiences a loss of inhibition and become painful. Infections, B12 deficiency, or iron deficiently have also been known to damage taste buds. Burning mouth syndrome is found more often on those people who have a above average number of taste buds on the tip of their tongue. Sj�gren's syndrome, diabetes, thyroid disease and liver dysfunction have also been associated with burning mouth syndrome.
