Case Report
A 57-year-old female presented with complaints of persistent burning in the mouth. She noted that the burning was most severe on the upper hard palate, but also noted burning on the tongue. She also noted dryness and felt that her taste was somewhat altered by a bitterness. She noted that there was no particular precipitating factor, and that the symptoms seemed to have developed over the course of months. She denied any specific pain with chewing or while eating, and often noted the symptoms improved with eating. She saw her dentist who performed a thorough oral examination and found no evidence of significant dental, gingival or mucosal problems. She was told that she had burning mouth syndrome.
