Q: My lips, mouth, tongue and gums sometimes burn. What causes that?

A: You may have a condition called "burning mouth syndrome." It affects an estimated five percent of the adult population in North America. A burning or stinging sensation, primarily on the tongue, characterizes the condition.

Unfortunately, research has uncovered little about the causes of the condition. In fact, some researchers view burning mouth syndrome, or BMS, as a "marker" or symptom of another disorder rather than a disease in and of itself. Chronic anxiety, depression, type 2 diabetes and various nutritional deficiencies are among the more common conditions that have been associated with BMS. Some studies have shown that 10 percent of people who use tartar-control toothpaste have developed burning sensations in their mouths. In some cases, lifestyle changes have preceded an onset of BMS.

If burning mouth syndrome troubles you, talk to your dentist. Your dentist may suggest you consult with an ear, nose and throat specialist for further diagnosis.
