How to Alleviate Mouth Burn
How to Alleviate Mouth Burn
Almost everyone has experienced a mouth burn at some point in their life with foods and drinks that are too hot. Generally, the pain from the burn will subside within a few days but until then, there are some things that you can do to cool the pain of a mouth burn.
Instructions
Step 1
Gargle with cool water. This will help cool and soothe the burn. You can also try eating cold foods like popsicles or ice cream. Sucking on ice cubes will help numb the pain and cool your mouth.
Step 2
Avoid eating hot foods and drinks, spicy foods, salt or citrus fruit. These foods and drinks can further irritate the mouth burn area. Choose cold foods and drinks instead. You can hold a cold food item up against the burn area to help dull the pain and provide some relief, but avoid rough contact with the area.
Step 3
Swish a peroxide mouth wash or mixture (diluted with water) around your mouth to help prevent infection. You can also find other ideas for home remedies to help the area heal by searching online. There are many products and remedies for mouth sores that can also be used to treat a mouth burn.
Step 4
Take a pain reliever such as acetaminophen. You can also use pain relievers that are made specifically for mouth sores.
Step 5
See a medical professional if your burn lasts longer than several weeks, is severe or if it is accompanied by symptoms like fevers, vomiting or weakness.
