Burning Mouth Syndrome Heats Up in Alternative Medicine Circles

Today’s daily question posed to alternative medicine guru, Dr. Andrew Weil, inquires about burning mouth syndrome.

Burning mouth syndrome can actually operate as a symptom of other conditions related to health and wellness such as menopause, oral thrush or anxiety. Many health experts believe that it is commonly related with postmenopausal women because of hormonal changes occurring in the body that may alter the make-up of saliva.

Burning mouth can also be the result of dangerous side effects of conventional, prescription drugs. Many antidepressants, diuretics, and hypertension drugs can bring about the condition of burning mouth syndrome. Autoimmune disorders related to aging have also been known to bring about burning mouth syndrome as have nerve damage, allergies, reflux, yeast infections and allergies.

Nutritional imbalances could be another cause of this disorder. Iron and zinc deficiencies can lead to burning mouth which can feel like a “thick” tongue or cause temporary speech impediments.

Alternative medicine therapies that can help with burning mouth syndrome include hypnotherapy and DGL (a form of licorice root). Other natural remedies recommended by the alternative medicine expert include slippery elm.
