Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation, Ltd.
Burning Mouth Syndrome (BMS) affects more than 1 million U.S. adults, primarily older women. Although the pain and burning associated with BMS usually originate from the lips and oral cavity, dentists are less likely than physicians to manage these patients.
Burning mouth syndrome is a chronic oralfacial pain disorder usually unaccompanied by mucosal lesions or other signs. Several oral sites-lips, palate, tongue-are usually affected, and symptoms include oral burning, dry mouth, thirst, dysgeusia (persistent altered taste perception), changes in eating habits, depression, and a decreased desire to socialize.
Disease connected to BMS include, but are not limited to: viral infections, salivary gland dysfunction, taste dysfunction, hematological disorders, central nervous system disorders, diabetes mellitus, and Sjogren's syndrome.
In the absence of any identifiable cause of the burning sensation, drug therapy is utilized in the treatment. Medications used for BMS include antifungals, antibacterials, coricosteroids, vitamin and mineral replacements, hormone replacements, antidepressants, and antihistamines.
At the Smell & Taste Treatment and Research Foundation, a thorough initial neurological evaluation is performed. Additional diagnostic testing may also need to be performed to delineate a specific diagnosis, and to help manage and treat those who suffer from these conditions.
